Since I missed ORIGINS to attend my daughter's graduation from FIDM, and just because I've never been - I attended GENCON in Indianapolis …

Wow! What a huge event … Mostly run very well.

There were game and seminar events spread amongst the entire Convention Hall areas, amongst the meeting areas and ballrooms of multiple hotels within about a three or four square block area … as well as inside the Indianapolis Colt Football Stadium including filling the entire field area.

Admittedly, wargaming is not the focus of GENCON however I thought there were a good number of wargaming events and all I attended were well attended (and we'll run).

I played COMBAT INFANTRY (CBG), AGE OF SAIL (ARES), JAGDPANZER (tank skirmish mini rules - 2012 Jeff Gullion), Fletcher Pratt's Naval Wargame (ww1/ww2 naval surface combat mini rules - 2011 John Curry), FOG OF WAR (Stronghold Games).

There was a nice walkthru "museum" with displays showing programs, games, and photos from the past 50 years of GENCON. Wargames were well represented as were D&D.

GAMING CONS for 2017 by rickbillrickbill, 27 Feb 2017 05:13

Anyone using VASSAL on a touch-screen? I have tried but it seems to be a bit klunky. Anyone else had better luck? Any pointers?

updated the layout of the VWC wiki pages especially the bulletin board (multiple "stickies" on the same row).

I'm trying to figure out how to automate the searches in VASSAL so that this can be played double blind. The decoy counters on the search map are okay for FOG of WAR but it just doesn't have the same intensity for me as NOT knowing!

New Guild for VWC on BGG by rickbillrickbill, 27 Sep 2011 23:39

Anyone who can … I highly recommend participating in the WAR COLLEGE at ORIGINS 2011 in Columbus, Ohio.

There are a group of events called STAFF WARGAMING (listed under roleplaying events) where the guys from the War College (yes, the US Army War College) run a game in which the participants take the role of CC, XO, G2, G3, G5, … etc and try to defeat the enemy. Most Excellent!! Afterwards, their is a hot wash and analysis with the professional wargamers evaluating how the team did.

Another set of events which I highly recommend are called ARMORED PREDATORS in the miniatures section. A father and son team run this tank vs tank (about 15-20 tanks per side … usually their are 10-20 players). The use a set of house rules which are fairly similar to PANZER!

I'm a bit swamped at work and won't be able to attend this year. But, if you can … I highly recommend that you do. Besides, the VENDOR hall usually has a who's who of wargaming designers at the various publishers' booths (JD Webster, Larry Bond, Lou Zocchi, Mark Walker, Dean Essig, Steve Cunliffe, …)

- enjoy!

If anyone wants to play some war games in real time—write me Jack moc.liamg|rjhguhcmwj#moc.liamg|rjhguhcmwj.

I play lots of different wargames so I"m open to just about anything.

Jack

The VWC Game Matcher is now available in the VWC vLobby. Enter two boardgamegeek usernames. The tool uses the boardgamegeek xmlapi to search the owned games in each player's boardgamegeek collection and finds games which exist in both collections.

Have fun with it!

and Let's play!

vLobby Features by rickbillrickbill, 10 Feb 2011 05:52

From the poll results, I'm leaning towards 3 vEvent offerings per weekend on Saturday, 1600 and 2200 GMT and Sunday 2100 GMT. perhaps keeping CDG theme meetup and looking for specific game offerings in the future.

If that is not what you think should happen … make your opinion known in the polls or here. If that IS what you think should happen … make your opinion known in the polls or here.

Future for vEvents by rickbillrickbill, 08 Feb 2011 19:54

I am playing a game of Paths of Glory with a German friend, using VASSAL and ACTS. The game is running for about 2 months now and we are in Winter turn of 1916. I am playing the Central Powers and concenctrated mainly on getting to Total War as fast as possible and being ready for the Italian and Romanian entry in the Great War. Now I reached Total War, I will open the offensive on the Western front.
My opponent had to interrupt the game for a few weeks, so I started playing Ardennes '44. Have been reading the rules and am playing my first testgame solo now. To make this learning process a lot more interesting I am handling it as a historical study, I started the campaign as historical as possible, making all the initial assaults as happend on the 16 of December '44 (I'm reading Battle of the Bulge written by Danny S. Parker, which gives a very detailed day-to-day account of all the important actions in this campaign). As soon as I have all the game mechanics under my thumb I will restart my solo game. Ardennes '44 will be used for the campaign simulation, but the important battles will be fought using ASL.

I would encourage everyone to share their VWC game-related news here, just to give Rick feedback that the site is being helpful.

Rick and I have just enjoyed a great game of Tigers in the Snow (Memoir '44 overlord format battlemap) over two nights VF2F using Vassal. We plan to play more games soon.

Mike Owen and I have just started turn 6 of Shifting Sands on Vassal PBEM.

What are you playing?

Phil.

VWC Game Experiences by philmcdphilmcd, 31 Jan 2011 09:40

Maybe the themed nights should wait until we've got a few more regular participants?

Perhaps a come-one come-all meetup time for now, and sort out gaming on an ad-hoc basis for a while?

Happy either way.

Phil.
